Catholic Relief Services initiated PEER integrated education project on the uplifting of education in Siran Valley District Mansehra. The education system of the valley was badly affected in the earth quake of 2005. There were two main components of the said project e.g soft and hard. CRS undertook the responsibility of implementation of hard component of the project which mainly involve the construction and rehabilitation of the education infrastructure, while for soft components they explored local organization named Haashar Association, Mansehra . Haashar Association is already working in the SiranValley since 2000 on Social mobilization and have strong roots system and linkages in the community. After the earth quake Haashar Association also implementing early recovery, rehabilitation, Development and education projects.
PEER Integrated education project in Mansehra was launched in September 2010 by Haashar association in partnership of CRS with overall objective of “Earth quake affected children have access to quality education in a safe and child friendly learning environment” and this annual report covers progress on activities carried out during the last year, i.e. September 2011 to July 2011. Mentoring sessions of the teachers have been successfully completed. PTC and MG have been formed and their capacities have been built in taking the charge of children’s lives effectively and are functional in the project area.
Multi grade teaching methodologies have successfully been applied in the class rooms. Provisions of joyful learning kit to the children have improved the system. Volunteers’ group is one of the successes of Haashar to involve the community at cluster level to improve the quality of education. PTCs and volunteers, group arranged four enrolments walks and award ceremony to increase the enrolment of students with the support of Haashar
Hygiene session and hygiene events were important activities of the said project for improvement of hygienic practices and bring them into common in which teachers parents and students participated. Volunteers’ group arranged competitions at cluster level of co-curricular activities.
Last is the coordination meeting at District level for betterment of education system at Department level is the achievement of Haashar Association Mansehra in which most of the officials of the District level participated and it has been proved fruitful for the project sustainability.

Mobilization sessions of parents, teachers and communities were conducted. Data collection regarding school profiles on the CRS standardised pattern was also completed during the said period. All these ‘stage-setting’ activities lasted till October. Capacity building workshops for teachers of the selected schools and communities were completed at the end of October.
Hygiene sessions and hygiene events were important activities for improvement of hygienic practices and to bring them into common practices. For this purpose a total 60 hygiene sessions of students were conducted 50 hygiene events were conducted in which teachers parents and students participated. Volunteer groups arranged competitions at cluster level of co-curricular activities.
The process of teachers mentoring was initiated in the month of November and 56 teachers were mentored during first round and 45 teachers were mentored during the second round 8 teachers in 3rd round till the end of this year. Meanwhile Haashar started the activation of 33 PTCs and formation of 30 MGs in schools and communities so that locals could be oriented trained.
After capacity building Teachers are trained; classrooms rearranged according to the requirements of various-grades where children are attending classes. Provision of joyful learning and nursery kits, learning materials have helped build teachers pedagogical skills and knowledge and sustaining classroom learning environments. Volunteers’ group (volunteers from communities) is one of the successes of Haashar to involve the community at cluster level to improve the quality of education.
